How Does the Future Sound?
We must evade assumptions that the future is that singular direction ahead. Like virtual particles in a quantum field, multiple futures pop in and out of possibility (Tsing 2015: viii).
Amidst seemingly unstoppable forces such as global capital, climate change and post-Trump/Brexit politics, does the future sound hopeful or dismal? What can listening contribute to our understanding of the Anthropocene and the complex entanglements of time and scale it brings? Will the earth drown in the drone of traffic and the hum of computers, or are there more productive ways to hear the vibrations propagating amongst different species, technologies and materials?
This speculative project will attempt to dismantle, disrupt and detune ‘our’ sonic environment. It will shakedown the powers, imaginaries and infrastructures embroiled within the complex networks of a more-than-human world: re-hearing the turbulence of the present through the multifarious possibilities of its future.
